BIOMASS BOILERS
Biomass has been used for many years and is a relatively straightforward process. The system runs on solid fuel; this can be wood chips, pellets, logs or another fuel such as Elephant Grass.
Much of the fuel is considered as waste; pellets, for example, are made of sawdust and offcuts which are compacted to make an efficient fuel. This is then burnt to create heat which is transferred to a boiler and from there into the central heating.
Your house will need a chimney and this should be sited close to the boiler. Biomass boilers in general are larger than standard fuel boilers requiring a space of approximately 7 cubic metres to store the fuel for an average house, and more for a larger property. Storage is important as the fuel must be kept dry so that it burns efficient. Additionally access is required for delivery vehicles.
While heat pumps and solar thermal use ‘free’ energy, with a biomass boiler there is the on-going cost of fuel to consider, plus the need for storage space for the chosen fuel type.
